The Top 100 Most Beautiful Rustic Vacations of North America 2003 by Dusty Dave
The Bradford Camps Enjoy the spectacular beauty of northeastern Maine’s
Munsungan Lake at Bradford Camps. Flying
in to The Bradford Camps is like flying back one hundred years in time.
The airplane sets down on Munsungan Lake, surrounded by nothing but tall
pines and steep ridges, centered in Maine’s fabled North Maine Woods.
As you taxi to the dock, the cabins appear through the trees with
inviting chairs on open porches. Once
docked, your luggage is brought up the steps, past the main lodge and dining
room, to your own cabin on the water. Settle
in with a cocktail on the porch while you await the supper bell.
The drink is cooled with ice cut from the lake every winter, just as it
has always been at Bradford Camps. Sunday
means a full-spread turkey dinner with homemade bread and apple pie.
After dinner, meet with a guide to go over the prospects of tomorrow’s
fishing. The woods and waters around Munsungan are wild and deep.
They are home to deer, bear, moose, beaver, coyote, bobcat, eagles and
ospreys. You have the opportunity
for a fly-out and overnight trip to one of the outpost camps and many other
remote fishing waters in the area. If
you enjoy canoeing or kayaking, there are at least four beaches around Munsungan
Lake to discover for a picnic and a swim. |
